The G.F. Abela Junior College

The G.F. Abela Junior College was established in 1995 and forms part of the University of Malta. The College aims to provide a holistic quality education to all those who seek to join the University of Malta by preparing them to develop the attributes needed for tertiary level studies.

Ultimately, the College will prepare the students specifically for the Matriculation Certificate which will lead them to pursuit their University degree. Students who enrol at Junior College will sit for a two year course and may choose from a wide range of subjects however they must choose two subjects at Advanced Level, three at Intermediate Level, as well as Systems of Knowledge. Subjects chosen should also include any Special Course Requirements needed for their prospective University course. Students are urged to study meticulously the grouping provided before coming to a decision. Choose wisely the groupings provided before making a decision. Choose wisely because requests for changes in options will not be treated once the academic year is in full swing.

Upon SEC Ordinary Level results are published an orientation meeting is held to all prospective students attending Junior College. Orientation talks are also held at the College and are addressed by the Deans of the various University Faculties and students may benefit from advice from University lecturers regarding future areas of study. During which meeting further details are given out the students aspiring to attend the College. Moreover, a publication entitled “Look before you leap” has been designed to enables students to browse into various subjects offered before they make their selection. 

The College encourages students to develop their own initiative through guided self-teaching in preparation for their future University career. Services provided by the College also include counselling and pastoral guidance. There is a healthy interaction between College and University students who collaborate on cultural projects such as concerts, drama, sport, student exchanges, debates, seminars and so on.

Students attending the Junior College will have the opportunity to identify their potential and skills. Furthermore, the students are encouraged to participate in extra curriculum such as the College Orchestra, Young Enterprise and Sport tournaments and also to get involved in one of the students organizations present on campus. Amongst the organization present there are PULSE, SDM, Chrisco, MUSCjc, JPT and Young Enterprise.

The Junior College students have the opportunity to elect their representatives in the Student Council elections. The KSJC (Kunsill Studenti Junior College) is the student body that represent and works for the common good of all Junior College students. PULSE has won the last two consecutive elections.
